New Inlet Beach Underpass: A Safer and More Scenic Route for 30A Visitors
Exciting news for visitors and residents of 30A! The long-awaited Inlet Beach underpass is now officially open, providing a safer and more scenic passageway for pedestrians and cyclists. Opened to the public on August 28, 2024, this new underpass is set to enhance the experience of those navigating between Highway 98 and the charming stretch of 30A.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) spearheaded this $5.6 million project, constructing a 12-foot-wide, 136-foot-long tunnel that ensures foot and bike traffic can move safely under the bustling highway. This initiative has been years in the making, driven by the growing number of pedestrians and cyclists in the area.
“This tunnel was created to address the increasing pedestrian traffic in this region,” said Ian Satter, FDOT spokesperson. “It’s truly a community project, with support from Walton County and local property owners who generously donated land.”
Making a Positive Impact
The new underpass is already making a positive impact. Local residents, who have long dealt with the challenges of navigating the busy intersection, are thrilled with the improvement. Amanda Hampel, a local resident, shared her excitement: “This is a 1000% improvement. Every day, just leaving work on Highway 98, you’d almost run over pedestrians or cyclists. This underpass will keep traffic flowing smoothly.”
Visual Delight
Beyond its functional benefits, the underpass is also a visual delight. The walls of the tunnel are adorned with colorful murals created by local artists, adding a vibrant touch to the journey. And the art doesn’t stop there—the Cultural Arts Alliance has partnered with Walton County to bring sculptures to both sides of the pedestrian path, making this underpass a true cultural landmark for the area.
Maintaining the Underpass
As the only underpass on Highway 98 and the second in the panhandle, this project is unique. Walton County will maintain the underpass, which includes large drains designed to prevent flooding during storms, ensuring that it remains a safe and accessible route year-round.
For those planning to visit 30A soon, be sure to take a stroll or bike ride through the new Inlet Beach underpass. It’s more than just a path—it’s a testament to the community’s commitment to safety, art, and the natural beauty that makes this area so special.
